Start with the fully loaded reel weight and add a suitable safety allowance. Confirm that both stands, the spindle and locking components are rated for the complete assembly rather than the empty drum.
Measure reel width, center-hole diameter and required lifting height. The spindle should provide adequate support without excessive clearance, and each stand should have enough adjustment to level the reel on site.
Set the stands on firm, even ground and align them before raising the drum. Use retaining collars, check that the reel rotates freely and never work beneath a suspended reel. Braking should be smooth enough to prevent overrun without shock loading the system.
